Nikon / Sony connection?

I saw where supposedly Nikon is using Sony sensors for the new cameras. The Sony 700 that just came out has the same sensor and LCD as the new Nikon offerings. I would assume that it is also a Sony innovation. Just how do the two companies share this technology without one treading on the others feet? Sony is a big company with lots and lots of capitol. what's to stop them from trying to use Nikon technology and outdo Nikon? Is Sony holding back on the technology they possess so as not to tread on Nikons ground? My inquiring mind wants to know.
